Appearance  

The Black Terrier is an above-average large, impressive dog with a bone-strong skeleton and powerful musculature. Its appearance reminds of bears, it´s elegant walk resembles the trot of horses. The hair seems rough, fits closely with a dense undercoat. The coat is shiny black with some white hairs. The advantages of this coat are that the Black Terrier do not molt, which means though that frequent brushing and trimming are necessary.

The head seems rectangular and dull, with the long, marked beard and the rough, bushy eyebrows. It has white, strong teeth with scissors bite. The chaps that are covered with snout hairs are fleshy and blackly pigmented. The nose is big and black. The eyes are almond-shaped and dark, skewed and darkly rimmed. The rectangular ears are highly applied and tilted forwards.

The neck is long and muscular. The back is straight and muscular, the croup is broad and a little bid curved, declining to the highly set and strong rod. The withers are a little higher and is for the male dogs 66-72 cm, for the bitches 64-70 cm. The weight is near 40-65 kg. Since the cropping of the rod is prohibited, the most different forms of the tail are found, from straight to curly.

The chest is spacious and deep and reaces at least onto the elbows, or deeper. At the legs the coat is more opulent; the paws are large and strong with a well upholstered bale. With the forelegs it stands narrower than with the strong muscled hind legs. The trot and the gallop are light-footed, free and harmonious. His entire constitution is strong and forceful. The male dog is clearly more massive than the bitch is.

Character Traits

The Black Terrier is a very friendly dog. He knows how to handle children, old people or disabled persons. It is very cautious opposite foreigner, and defends his family to the maximum. This dogs are very territorial, has, however, a very harmonious being and is extremely nerve-strong.

It is no dog to keep in locked away. It needs the proximity of and the contact to its family. The canoodling with its family is one of its favourite occupations. In the house it behaves calmly and cool, in the open it is always ready for a game. It wants to be busy, at best in a dog school.

Most of the Black Terrier are very sensitive dogs, which means also that they are very resentful. It is very courageous, knows how to get its will, and knows its strength well. Its intelligence, its self-confidence and its dynamics are combined with beauty; elegance, strength and nerve-strength, and above all its unspoiled temperament are part and parcel of this power package. These genuine usage dogs are blessed with willingness to work and an ability to learn quickly.  They can be trained to become a guard, protection, rescue, trail, accompany dog or they can also be trained as a disabled person dog. They need, however a lot of time and patience.

Although it is very lively, it is capable of integrating into the family. They are very coarse and strong, extremely forceful and in despite that very sensitive and almost gentle.

The Black Terrier becomes mature very late and need a lot of love, however, it needs a consistent hand during the upbringing. His evolution simply needs a lot of time. With inappropriate hardness one destroys the being of these wonderful dogs.

Everyone who wants so buy such a puppy must be clear that s/he has to take care for a wonderful animal for the next 10 to 13 years.

With all these fantastic qualities, it's wonderful being, it's charm and it's beauty, it embodies the perfect dog. Those who learned to love the Black Terriers, will never again care for another dog.
